Your guide to Far North Queensland

At the end of last year, Ed & I decided to visit Far North Queensland for our summer holidays. My father had lived up that way for a time and I remembered it as a tropical oasis - in particular the astounding beauty of Paronella Park. It’d been a place that I longed to go back to as an adult and so when we decided to plan for a trip up North, I was beyond keen.

We stayed in Palm Cove which I had been told by others had dated and was well due for a makeover. I really have to disagree - I think the fact that this area hasn’t been completely overrun with world class resorts or slathered in white rendering, is what’s so charming about it.

Ed and I stayed at a little boutique hotel with only several rooms, which we found trawling through booking.com - I suggest staying in the Palm Cove area if you’re after a relaxing stay, on the outskirts of Cairns. It’s a fab location for exploring the area as you’re already North should you wish to explore the Daintree and you’re only twenty minutes from the centre of Cairns.

Below I’ve outlined some of our favourite must-see spots in FNQ…

Millaa Millaa Falls
This postcard-perfect waterfall is a must-see. Surrounded by lush greenery and cattle farms, it’s the ideal spot for a refreshing swim or sweet lil’ picnic.

Cairns to Millaa (The Back Way)
Take the scenic route from Cairns to Millaa Millaa and enjoy the rolling green hills, cute country towns, and insane lookouts along the way. It’s along this route that you’ll stumble across Lake Barrine and if you’ve got the time you could even venture into the Atherton Tablelands.

Paronella Park
Paronella Park is one of my favourite spots oat, it’s a historic castle set amidst the rainforest. The lush gardens, waterfalls, and it’s rich history make it a one-of-a-kind experience. Make sure you pack a bunch of film for the camera - this place is BEAUTIFUL

Clamshell Falls
A hidden gem, this waterfall offers a serene escape. The hike to the falls is equally rewarding, with vibrant flora and fauna along the way.

Lake Barrine
This volcanic crater lake is a tranquil haven. Enjoy a boat cruise, take a rainforest walk, or relax over some coffee and scones at the lakeside teahouse. It reminds me of a scene straight out of Dirty Dancing (lavish 1950’s vibes)

Skyrail Rainforest Cableway
We took the train up to Kuranda which is beautiful don’t get me wrong, but it was the skyrail on the way back down that was truly spectacular. Cruise above the ancient rainforest canopy on this world-renowned cableway. The panoramic views of the greenery and Coral Sea are b-r-e-a-t-h-t-a-k-i-n-g! Keep an eye out for blue Ulysses fluttering above the treetops. It’s divine.

Rusty’s Fruit Market
Rusty’s Market in Cairns is the place to discover fresh tropical fruits, artisanal products, and vibrant local culture. I recommend skipping lunch and going on an empty stomach there’s a large array of asian street food on offer - all of it delicious. A great stop in before heading off on a day trip!

Nu Nu Restaurant
Located on the beachfront in Palm Cove, Nu Nu offers an unforgettable beachside dining experience. Their menu is packed with the best of local produce with a luxe twist. The space itself is everything you want in a beachside restaurant - old timber floor boards, bunches of bananas and coconuts hanging from the walls. It’s completely unpretentious considering it’s excellent reputation. Book early to snag a seat outside beneath the palm trees and festoons light and get in to watch the sunset over the islands.

Cape Tribulation
Where the rainforest meets the reef, Cape Tribulation is heaven on earth. Enjoy the pristine beaches, mangroves, and rainforest trails in this World Heritage-listed area. If you’re lucky enough to have a boat in this region, I believe you can see a side to CT that’s missed by most. I recommend finding a way to do so.

Mossman Gorge
My favourite swimming hole, hands down. Take a guided Dreamtime Walk or cool off in the crystal-clear river. The rounded boulders set against the sparkling emerald water is a sight you won’t soon forget. Pack a picnic lunch, you’ll likely wanna hang around a while.

Daintree Rainforest
I didn’t know this but the Daintree is the world’s oldest rainforest - therefore, a must-visit for nature enthusiasts. Don’t miss a guided night walk to experience the forest’s nocturnal wonders. There are boat tours that run multiple times daily - your best bet of seeing a croc along the Daintree river.

Babinda Boulders & Josephine Falls
You can do both of these in the same day - These iconic swimming spots offer pristine waters surrounded by lush rainforest. Perfect for a picnic or a dip, they’re a refreshing way to experience FNQ’s natural beauty. Babinda itself it a super cute town, I recommend checking it out and stopping in for lunch at the local pub. It’s everything you’d want a tropical NQ town to be.

And of course…

Don’t forget to check out the reef. Please make sure you’re packing reef-safe sunscreen and do not miss the opportunity to snorkel. If you’ve been thinking about getting your diving license, spend a lil’ more and do it here.
